Hi everyone! As your friendly neighborhood health insurance broker, I know navigating the world of health insurance can be confusing, especially when it comes to enrollment periods. Fear not! This blog post will be your one-stop guide to understanding the different enrollment options available to you.
The biggest enrollment period is called Open Enrollment. This is a designated time frame when anyone can sign up for a health insurance plan on the Marketplace (also known as Affordable Care Act or ACA marketplace) regardless of their health status. In 2024, Open Enrollment ran from November 1st to January 16th. During this period, you can:
Life happens, and sometimes Open Enrollment slips by. Luckily, there are other ways to get health insurance coverage outside the Open Enrollment window:
Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs):
These are designated times where you can qualify for a plan due to a qualifying life event, such as job loss, marriage, birth of a child, or moving to a new state. You typically have 60 days after the qualifying event to enroll in a plan.
Employer-sponsored insurance:
If you get health insurance through your employer, you may have enrollment opportunities outside of Open Enrollment. Check with your HR department for specific details.
The coverage start date:
When you enroll during Open Enrollment and select a plan by December 15th, your coverage typically begins on January 1st of the following year. If you enroll after December 15th, your coverage will usually start on the 1st of the following month.
Shop around!
Open Enrollment is a great time to compare plans and find one that fits your needs and budget. The Marketplace website allows you to compare plans side-by-side based on factors like coverage, cost, and network of doctors.
